How we score
Every tool in this index receives five weighted sub-scores on a 0–10 scale, combined into one composite. Each tool runs through the same 12-garment control set — striped shirt, logo tee, lace dress, pleated skirt, leather jacket, patterned scarf and the rest — at identical settings, with identical prompts, on our own paid accounts.
Cost per usable image is list price divided by generations that pass quality control, not the vendor's headline rate. Read the full testing methodology.

Scores below are ours, produced in hands-on testing — not vendor-supplied ratings and not aggregated from marketing pages. The index mixes brand-side AI fashion model generator platforms with shopper-facing fitting rooms, so check the category column before comparing prices across rows.

Pricing reality check
Cost per usable image is list price divided by the generations that survive quality control. A $9/month plan with a 30% keeper rate costs more per shippable image than a $33/month plan at 85%. That is why we measure keeper rate rather than quoting the vendor's per-image number.
The benchmark to beat is human production: $25 to $75 per image for basic listing photography, $100 to $500+ per image for lifestyle and on-model work.

RemoveClothing indexes compliant, safe-for-work virtual try-on and fashion-imagery tools only. Applications whose primary purpose is producing non-consensual or explicit imagery are permanently excluded from this index and from every ranking on this site. That is an editorial line, not a ranking penalty.
We also exclude tools with no written commercial license and tools that claim ownership of uploaded photos. Where a vendor leaves retention or training-opt-out undocumented, it is stated plainly in the review and scored down on license clarity.

Checked on every tool
An AI virtual try-on tool segments the garment out of a source photo, estimates the pose and body shape of a target model, warps the garment onto that body with a diffusion model, then refines edges, shadows and fabric drape. The output is a still image, not a physical fit simulation.
Accuracy drops sharply on repeating patterns, legible text and sheer fabrics. That is exactly why garment fidelity carries the heaviest weight in our scoring — 30% of the composite. Across our control set, top-scoring tools hold prints and seams; mid-tier tools break stripe alignment and smear small logos.
12 of the 14 tools in this index ship a genuine free allowance rather than a watermark-only demo. Free tiers are sized for evaluation, not production: they are credit-capped, and several exclude commercial use, which makes their output unusable on a live product page.
Traditional product photography runs $25 to $75 per image for basic listing shots and $100 to $500+ for lifestyle work. AI tools land between roughly $0.075 and $1.00 per generated image, plus a subscription. The honest metric is cost per usable image, since rejected generations still burn credits.
It depends entirely on the tool and the plan tier, which is why license clarity is a scored dimension. Some tools grant full commercial rights at entry level; others restrict free-tier output to personal use. Amazon additionally requires AI-generated imagery to be labeled and bars it from the main listing image.
Safety varies by vendor. We check retention policy, whether uploads feed model training by default, and whether a deletion path exists. Tools that claim rights over uploaded photos or leave retention undocumented are downranked on license clarity and flagged in the individual review.
Reported reductions are real but mostly vendor-sourced. Zalando published a 40% decrease in returns in its Levi's pilot, and apparel carries a ~26% return rate while making up 56% of ecommerce returns. Treat single-pilot figures as directional rather than as an industry benchmark.
6 of the 14 indexed tools expose a public API, and 4 ship a native Shopify app. API access is scored under batch and API capability, which carries 15% of the composite score, because catalog work is throughput work.
