No competing photography cost calculator publishes its arithmetic. Here is ours, in full.
Traditional
(SKUs × images per SKU × rate per image) + (model day rate × shoot days) + (studio hours × studio rate) + (retouch per image × total images) + sample shipping and coordination.
AI
(plan cost × months) + (total images ÷ keeper rate × cost per generation). Dividing by keeper rate is the step everyone else skips: rejected generations still consume credits.
Hidden costs are the reason quoted photography budgets and final invoices diverge. Studio rental runs $150 to $300 an hour, retouching is nearly always quoted separately, and sample shipping plus coordination time is rarely in the estimate at all. Our defaults include them because real projects do.

What the calculator can't price in
- Marketplace constraints. Amazon requires AI imagery to be labeled and bars it from the main listing image, so a hybrid workflow is often mandatory.
- Brand risk. An image that misrepresents fabric or fit raises returns. Apparel already carries a ~26% return rate and 56% of ecommerce returns.
- Internal review time. Someone still has to look at every generation and reject the failures.
- Creative direction. AI does not decide styling, merchandising or campaign concept.
- Sample logistics. Both routes need the physical garment photographed at least once.
When a real photoshoot still wins
- Hero and campaign imagery where art direction is the point.
- Amazon main listing images, which cannot be AI-generated.
- Complex drapery, sheer layers or heavily structured tailoring.
- Catalogs under roughly 20 SKUs that refresh rarely.
- Brands whose signature colour must be exact, since hue drift is a known AI failure mode.

At volume, decisively. A 50-SKU catalog at five images each is 250 images: roughly $6,250 to $18,750 at basic listing rates, against tens of dollars in AI generation plus a monthly plan. Below about 20 SKUs the gap narrows enough that a real shoot is often the simpler choice.
Can I use AI-generated images on Amazon and Shopify?
Amazon requires AI-generated imagery to be labeled and prohibits it as the main listing image, with 1,600px minimum and 2,000px recommended. Shopify recommends 2,048×2,048 and accepts up to 5,000×5,000. The tool's own commercial license at your plan tier is a separate check.
What does this calculator not account for?
It excludes creative direction, sample production and shipping, model casting time, licensing renewals on human model imagery, and the internal hours spent reviewing and rejecting AI output. It also cannot price brand risk from an image that misrepresents the product.
