What AI virtual try-on is — and the two categories nobody separates

AI virtual try-on generates a photorealistic image of a garment worn on a body, without a physical shoot or fitting. Underneath, the tool segments the garment, estimates pose and body shape, warps the garment onto that body with a diffusion model, then refines edges and drape.

Buying the wrong category is the single most common wasted spend in this market. The two categories serve different people and are not interchangeable.

Category one

Brand-side AI fashion model generators

You supply a flat-lay, hanger shot, ghost mannequin or packshot; the tool renders it on a generated model. The output is marketing-ready catalog imagery. These replace the photoshoot.

Category two

Customer-facing fitting rooms

The shopper uploads a photo or picks a body type on your product page, and the garment is rendered onto them during the session. The output is an interactive experience, not a reusable asset.

How we test and score

Every tool receives five published sub-scores on a 0–10 scale, weighted into one composite. The criteria are published before the ranking, not written to justify it. Nine of the largest competing roundups in this category are vendor-owned and none of them publish numeric scores at all.

Dimension Weight What it measures
Garment Fidelity 30% How faithfully prints, seams, logos and fabric texture survive the transfer onto a generated model.
Model Consistency 20% Whether the same model identity, pose family and lighting can be reproduced across a whole catalog.
Cost per Usable Image 25% Published price divided by the share of generations that passed our usable-output check.
Batch & API 15% Bulk upload, queue throughput, API access and native storefront integrations.
License Clarity 10% How plainly the commercial usage rights and AI-labelling obligations are documented.

The test protocol

  1. Sign up on a paid plan under our own account and payment method.
  2. Run the fixed 12-garment control set: striped shirt, logo tee, lace dress, pleated skirt, leather jacket, patterned scarf and the rest.
  3. Generate a fixed batch per tool at identical settings, across three body types.
  4. Score blind against the rubric, reconciling any dimension where reviewers differ by more than two points.
  5. Count the keeper rate: images passing at 100% zoom with no warped logos, melted seams or anatomical artifacts.
  6. Re-test whenever a vendor ships a major model version, plus a scheduled quarterly sweep.

What we exclude

RemoveClothing ranks compliant, safe-for-work virtual try-on and fashion-imagery tools only. Applications whose primary purpose is producing non-consensual or explicit imagery are permanently excluded. We also exclude tools with no written commercial license and tools that claim ownership of uploaded photos.

How we test and who funds this site covers the full protocol, scoring weights, corrections policy and conflict-of-interest rules.

Brand-side AI fashion model generators, ranked

These 10 tools replace the photoshoot. You feed them a garment photo; they return catalog imagery. Ranked by composite score.

1

FASHN.ai — Best overall, and the cheapest credible API

On-Model Generator · from $9/mo · $0.075/image via API · tested July 14, 2026

8.7 / 10

FASHN.ai is the strongest garment-fidelity engine we tested and the only tool whose API pricing survives a real catalog. Printed graphics, stripe alignment across seams and knit texture all held up better than anything else in the test set. The trade-off is scope: it is a try-on engine, not a full photoshoot studio, so scene and background control is thinner than Botika or Nightjar.

Key features

  • Trained on ~18M try-on examples; 4K upscaling on Pro; public API with volume pricing; accepts flat-lay, hanger and on-model inputs; batch endpoint

Strengths

  • Best garment fidelity in the test group; cheapest credible per-image API rate; fast generation; genuinely usable free credits for evaluation

Limitations

  • Base resolution of 576x864 is below Amazon and Shopify thresholds; model identity drifts across long batches; no Shopify app; no scene or background library; no video
  • Garment Fidelity 9.1
  • Model Consistency 8.2
  • Cost per Usable Image 9.4
  • Batch & API 9.0
  • License Clarity 7.6

2

Botika — Best end-to-end replacement for a flat-lay photoshoot

On-Model Generator · from $33/mo (annual) · Roughly $1.10/usable image at entry tier · tested July 12, 2026

8.2 / 10

Botika is the closest thing in this category to hiring a studio. It handles the model, the styling, the background and the retouch rounds, and its reusable model identities are the most consistent we measured across a catalog batch. You pay for that: the effective cost per usable image is several times FASHN.ai, and turnaround is measured in minutes rather than seconds.

Key features

  • 1 credit = 1 photo, 5 credits = 1 video; unlimited credit rollover while subscribed; retouch rounds with a stated fix window; large model and background library; custom background colors and own footwear upload on Advanced

Strengths

  • Best model consistency across a batch; complete studio workflow with no assembly required; explicit human retouch rounds; clear commercial licensing

Limitations

  • Effective cost per usable image is many times the API-priced tools; ~15 minute processing rules out interactive iteration; fine print and sheer fabrics soften; rollover credits expire on cancellation; no public API
  • Garment Fidelity 8.0
  • Model Consistency 9.0
  • Cost per Usable Image 7.2
  • Batch & API 8.1

3

Nightjar — Best for Shopify sellers who want per-image pricing

On-Model Generator · ~$0.10/image · ~$0.10/image · tested July 11, 2026

8.1 / 10

Nightjar sits between the raw engines and the full studios. Per-image pricing around $0.10 with 2048x2048 default output means it clears Shopify and Amazon resolution thresholds without an upsell, and the Shopify app removes the export-and-upload step entirely. The model and style libraries are broad rather than deep.

Key features

  • 80+ fashion models; 150+ photography styles; native Shopify app; 2048x2048 default output; 4K upscale; per-image pricing with no subscription lock-in

Strengths

  • Marketplace-ready resolution by default; Shopify app removes manual export; per-image pricing suits bursty catalogs; broad model and style library

Limitations

  • Layered outerwear boundaries blur; no public API; model identity not as stable as Botika across long batches; 4K upscale is an extra charge
  • Garment Fidelity 8.3
  • Model Consistency 8.0
  • Cost per Usable Image 8.4

Claid.ai — Best all-rounder when try-on is only part of the job

Retouch & Background · from $9/mo · $0.09 to $0.50/image depending on operation · tested July 10, 2026

7.8 / 10

Claid.ai is a broad product-imagery platform that happens to include on-model generation. If your actual problem is a mixed pile of background removal, upscaling, batch cleanup and occasional on-model shots, it handles all of it from one subscription at $9 a month entry, with 4K native output.

Key features

  • 100+ AI models; native 4K output; background replacement and upscaling alongside try-on; batch processing; API access

Strengths

  • One subscription covers a mixed image pipeline; cheap entry point; native 4K without an upsell; API available

Limitations

  • On-model fidelity trails the dedicated engines; patterned fabric drifts; weakest model consistency of the top tier; credit cost varies 4-24 per image which makes budgeting unreliable
  • Garment Fidelity 7.6
  • Model Consistency 7.4
  • Cost per Usable Image 8.0
  • Batch & API 8.5
  • License Clarity 7.8

5

WeShop AI — Best budget on-model generator for small catalogs

On-Model Generator · from $9.99/mo · Roughly $0.30 to $0.60/usable image · tested July 8, 2026

7.4 / 10

WeShop AI is priced for sellers rather than brands: $9.99 to $12.99 a month with a 10-point-per-image credit model. Output is solid on simple garments and the interface is the least intimidating in this group. The API is locked behind an Enterprise tier that starts around $457 a month, which puts automation out of reach for its actual audience.

Key features

  • 10 points per generated image; model and background library; approachable editing interface; Enterprise API tier

Strengths

  • Cheapest credible on-model generator; approachable interface for non-designers; adequate model variety for small catalogs

Limitations

  • API only on a ~$457/mo Enterprise plan with no middle tier; dense patterns and sheer fabrics degrade; no batch processing on consumer tiers; no Shopify app
  • Garment Fidelity 7.3
  • Model Consistency 7.2
  • Cost per Usable Image 7.9

6

Photoroom — Best batch throughput for high-volume listing cleanup

Retouch & Background · from $9.99/mo · Around $0.025/export on batch plans · tested July 8, 2026

7.3 / 10

Photoroom is a product-imagery workhorse whose on-model generation is a secondary feature. Where it wins outright is scale: batch plans from $99 a month cover 4,000 exports, which no dedicated try-on tool comes close to matching for bulk listing work.

Key features

  • 4,000 exports on the $99/mo batch plan; background removal and scene placement; API access; Shopify integration; published garment-retention research

Strengths

  • Unmatched cost per image at bulk volume; strong batch and API tooling; Shopify integration; vendor publishes its own testing research

Limitations

  • On-model fidelity is mid-pack and unreliable on prints; poor model consistency across batches; try-on is a secondary feature, not the core product
  • Garment Fidelity 7.0
  • Model Consistency 6.8
  • Cost per Usable Image 7.8

7

On-Model — Best low-commitment entry point for European sellers

On-Model Generator · from EUR 19/mo · Roughly EUR 0.40 to 0.80/usable image · tested July 7, 2026

7.2 / 10

On-Model starts at EUR 19 a month and gives 5 free images before you pay, which makes it one of the few tools you can properly evaluate on your own garments first. Model consistency is respectable. The absence of an API and thin batch tooling caps it at small-catalog use.

Key features

  • 5 free images on signup; flat-lay to on-model conversion; European pricing in EUR; multilingual site and support

Strengths

  • Genuinely testable before paying; decent model consistency; low monthly commitment; EUR-denominated pricing suits EU sellers

Limitations

  • No public API; thin batch tooling; fine print softens; smaller model library than the leaders; no Shopify app
  • Garment Fidelity 7.4
  • Model Consistency 7.6

8

Modelia — Best 4K output with API access at a mid-tier price

On-Model Generator · from $35/mo · Roughly $0.35 to $0.70/usable image · tested July 7, 2026

7.1 / 10

Modelia starts at $35 a month and includes both 4K output and API access at that tier, which is unusual. Fidelity and consistency are mid-pack, but for a team that needs marketplace-resolution output and programmatic access without an enterprise contract, the combination is hard to find elsewhere.

Key features

  • 4K output at mid-tier; API access included from the standard plan; one-time credit packs available; batch processing

Strengths

  • 4K and API together at $35/mo; marketplace-ready output without an upscale step; one-time credit top-ups available

Limitations

  • Fidelity and model consistency are mid-pack; smaller style library than Nightjar; no Shopify app; no video
  • Garment Fidelity 7.2
  • Model Consistency 7.0
  • Cost per Usable Image 6.6
  • Batch & API 7.6

VModel — Best pay-as-you-go option with real free credits

On-Model Generator · Pay-as-you-go · ~$0.02 per swap at signup credit rate · tested July 6, 2026

6.8 / 10

VModel is pure pay-as-you-go with $10 in free credits on signup, roughly 500 swaps. For anyone who needs occasional garment swaps rather than a catalog pipeline, that removes the subscription question entirely. Quality is below the leaders and licensing language is thin.

Key features

  • $10 free credits on signup (~500 swaps); pure pay-as-you-go with no subscription; API access

Strengths

  • By far the largest free evaluation allowance; no subscription commitment; fast generation

Limitations

  • Output quality below the leaders on pattern and structured garments; licensing language is thin; no Shopify app; no batch tooling
  • Garment Fidelity 6.9
  • Model Consistency 6.5
  • Cost per Usable Image 8.2
  • Batch & API 6.8

The New Black — Cheapest way to experiment, capped at 1K output

On-Model Generator · Credit packs from $5 · ~$0.12/generation · tested July 5, 2026

6.4 / 10

The New Black gives 3 free credits and sells packs from $5 for 40 credits, which makes it the cheapest place to experiment with AI fashion imagery. The 1K output ceiling means nothing it produces meets Amazon or Shopify recommended resolution.

Key features

  • 3 free credits; credit packs from $5 for 40 credits; fast iteration for concepting

Strengths

  • Cheapest per-generation cost in the group; free credits with no card; good for rapid concepting

Limitations

  • Hard 1K output cap means output does not meet Amazon or Shopify recommended resolution; weak model consistency; no API; no batch processing
  • Garment Fidelity 6.6
  • Model Consistency 6.2
  • Cost per Usable Image 7.4
  • Batch & API 5.8

Customer-facing virtual fitting rooms, ranked

These 4 tools live on the storefront rather than in the studio. They render the garment onto the shopper during the session, so integration effort and page-speed impact matter as much as fidelity.

11

Genlook — Best customer-facing fitting room, and the most honest free tier

Free, up to $99/mo · Shopify app · tested July 9, 2026

7.7 / 10

Genlook is a shopper-facing try-on widget rather than a catalog generator, and it is the only tool in this group whose free tier is genuinely usable for evaluation: 10 try-ons a month, no card. Median generation of about 9 seconds is fast enough to sit on a live product page without losing the shopper.

Strengths

  • Genuinely usable free tier with no card; fast enough for a live product page; clean Shopify and Klaviyo integration; transparent per-try-on overage pricing

Limitations

  • Output quality depends entirely on the shopper photo; not usable for catalog or marketing imagery; no API; no batch processing

12

WearView — Best licensing clarity, if you can live without a free tier

from $29/mo · tested July 6, 2026

7.0 / 10

WearView has the clearest commercial-rights language of anything we reviewed and outputs up to 4K, but it has no free tier at all: Lite is $29 a month for 50 credits. The vendor is unusually direct about that, which is a small trust signal in a category full of evasion.

Strengths

  • Clearest licensing terms of any tool tested; 4K output; vendor is upfront about its own limitations

Limitations

  • No free tier at all, so you cannot test on your own garments before paying; 50 credits for $29 makes retries expensive; no API; no Shopify app

13

Antla — Storefront try-on widget for English-language stores

from $19.99/mo · Shopify app · tested July 5, 2026

6.6 / 10

Antla is a customer-facing try-on widget from $19.99 a month with a 7-day trial and no free plan. It does the job on an English-language storefront, but the widget is English-only, which rules it out for multilingual stores.

Strengths

  • Straightforward storefront integration; short but real trial period

Limitations

  • Widget is English-only, which rules out multilingual storefronts; no free plan; no API; not usable for catalog imagery

14

Veesual — Enterprise fitting room, priced and paced accordingly

from $50/mo · tested July 4, 2026

6.3 / 10

Veesual starts at $50 a month and takes roughly four weeks to set up. It is built for brands with a merchandising team and an integration budget, not for a store owner who wants a widget live this afternoon. For that audience it is credible; for everyone else the setup cost is the whole story.

Strengths

  • Built for large apparel catalogs; implementation support included; credible for brands with a merchandising team

Limitations

  • Roughly four weeks to go live; $50/mo floor with no free tier or trial; no self-serve path; not usable for catalog imagery

Best free AI virtual try-on options (and what you actually get)

Free tiers exist, but they are credit-capped and frequently exclude commercial use. That license question — not the credit count — is what decides whether free output can go on a live product listing.

What AI try-on replaces versus a traditional photoshoot

Basic listing photography runs $25 to $75 per image and lifestyle work $100 to $500+; AI generation runs roughly $0.075 to $1.00 per image plus a subscription. On a 50-SKU catalog at five images each, that is the difference between a five-figure production budget and a two-figure monthly plan.

The AI fashion photography market grew from $1.51B in 2024 to $2.01B in 2025, a 32.5% CAGR, which is compressing per-image pricing across the board. Avoid long annual lock-ins while that is still happening.

Marketplace compliance: Amazon, Shopify and AI image rules

Amazon requires AI-generated imagery to be labeled and prohibits it as the main listing image. Its resolution floor is 1,600px with 2,000px recommended. Shopify accepts up to 5,000×5,000 and recommends 2,048×2,048.

Amazon

  • 1,600px minimum on the longest side; 2,000px recommended for zoom.
  • AI-generated images must be labeled.
  • AI-generated images cannot serve as the main listing image.

Shopify

  • Supports up to 5,000×5,000 pixels.
  • 2,048×2,048 recommended for product imagery.
  • No platform-level AI labeling requirement, but consumer-protection rules still apply.

Tools whose commercial license is vague, or that reserve rights over uploaded photos, are downranked on license clarity. That dimension is worth 10% of the composite for exactly this reason.

How to choose the right tool

Answer five questions in order and the shortlist writes itself.

  1. Who sees the image — your catalog, or the shopper in-session? That picks your category before anything else.
  2. How many images per month? Under 50 favours flat subscriptions; 500+ favours API pricing.
  3. Do your garments have patterns, legible logos or sheer fabric? If so, weight garment fidelity above price.
  4. Do you need batch throughput or API access to hit your deadline?
  5. Do you need transferable commercial rights at your plan tier, and marketplace-compliant resolution?

Common mistakes

  • Judging a tool on a single cherry-picked demo image from its own marketing site.
  • Comparing headline per-image price instead of cost per usable image after rejects.
  • Buying a shopper-facing fitting room when the real need was catalog photography.
  • Shipping free-tier output to a product page without reading the commercial license.

Frequently asked questions

How do virtual try-ons work?

A virtual try-on tool segments the garment from a source photo, estimates the pose and body shape of the target model, warps the garment onto that body with a diffusion model, then refines seams, shadows and drape. The result is a synthesized photograph, not a physical fit measurement.

Is virtual try-on worth it?

For catalogs above roughly 50 SKUs, yes. Traditional listing photography runs $25 to $75 per image against $0.075 to $1.00 for AI generation, and reported return reductions of up to 40% compound the saving. Below 20 SKUs a single real photoshoot is often still simpler.

Is Google Virtual Try-On free?

Google offers try-on inside Search and Shopping at no cost to shoppers in supported regions, combining a shopper photo with merchant product imagery. It is a discovery surface for shoppers rather than a production tool for brands, so it does not replace catalog image generation.

What is the best free AI virtual try-on tool?

FASHN.ai is the strongest genuinely free entry point in our testing, scoring 8.7/10 with 10 free credits on signup. Free tiers across this category are credit-capped and sized for evaluation, and several restrict commercial use of the output.

Can I try on clothes online for free?

Yes, up to a point. 12 of the 14 tools we tested offer a free allowance, typically a handful of monthly generations or a small credit grant. Expect watermarks or non-commercial licensing on free output, which makes it unsuitable for a live product listing.

How accurate is AI virtual try-on for patterned or sheer fabrics?

Accuracy falls off sharply on repeating patterns, legible text and sheer or heavily structured fabrics. Our control set deliberately includes a striped shirt, a logo tee and a lace dress for that reason. Top-scoring tools hold stripe alignment; mid-tier tools smear small logos and flatten drape.

Can I use AI-generated model photos on Amazon or Shopify?

Amazon requires AI-generated imagery to be labeled and prohibits it as the main listing image, with a 1,600px minimum and 2,000px recommendation. Shopify accepts up to 5,000×5,000 and recommends 2,048×2,048. Beyond platform rules, check the tool's own commercial license at your plan tier.

How much does AI virtual try-on cost per image?

Per-image pricing across the tools we tested runs from roughly $0.075 to about $1.00, on top of subscriptions between $9 and $99 per month. The number that matters is cost per usable image, since credits are consumed by rejected generations — FASHN.ai leads that dimension at 9.4/10.

The verdict

FASHN.ai leads the brand-side category at 8.7/10, and Genlook leads customer-facing fitting rooms at 7.7/10. Honesty note: if you sell fewer than about 20 SKUs and refresh them rarely, this whole category is probably overhead. One good photoshoot will outlast a year of subscriptions.
