How to Wash White Clothes

Whites yellow for three different reasons and each needs a different fix. How to wash whites so they stay white, and how to reverse yellowing already set in.

To keep white clothes white, wash them separately in the hottest water the fabric allows, use an oxygen bleach rather than chlorine on most fabrics, and never let deodorant or sweat residue build up between washes. Yellowing is almost always a residue problem, not a dirt problem, which is why simply washing more often does not fix it.

Why white clothes turn yellow

There are three distinct causes and they respond to different treatments:

  • Protein and sebum residue from sweat and skin oil, concentrated at collars and underarms. Responds to enzyme detergent.
  • Aluminium salts from antiperspirant reacting with sweat proteins. This is the stiff yellow underarm crust. Responds to an acid pre-treatment, not to bleach.
  • Chlorine bleach damage. Chlorine reacts with protein residue and with some synthetic fibres and sets a permanent yellow. Counter-intuitively, bleaching whites can be what yellowed them.

The washing routine that keeps whites white

  1. Sort strictly. Whites wash with whites only. One pale grey item is enough to dull a load over time.
  2. Pre-treat collars and underarms every time, not only when you can see a mark. Residue is cumulative and invisible until it is not.
  3. Do not overload. Garments need room to move or soil redeposits on them. Two-thirds full is the working maximum.
  4. Use oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) in the main wash. It brightens without the protein-yellowing reaction chlorine causes.
  5. Wash hot where the label allows, 60°C for cotton whites. Cooler washes leave sebum behind.
  6. Dry in sunlight when you can. UV is a genuine, free bleaching agent on cotton and linen.

Removing yellow stains that have already set

For underarm yellowing, make a paste of oxygen bleach powder and a little warm water, work it into the area, and leave it one to two hours before washing hot. For stubborn antiperspirant crust, pre-treat with white vinegar for 30 minutes first to dissolve the aluminium salts, rinse, then apply the oxygen bleach paste. Doing both at once neutralises them, so keep the stages separate with a rinse in between.

Whites that have been dried with the stain in them

Drying sets most stains, but oxygen bleach soaking is unusually good at reversing yellowing specifically, because you are lifting oxidised residue rather than a pigment. Dissolve oxygen bleach in hot water, submerge the garment fully, and leave it four to eight hours or overnight. Then wash as normal. Two soaks are often needed; the second is usually the one that works.

What to avoid

  • Chlorine bleach on anything with elastane, wool or silk. It permanently yellows all three.
  • Fabric softener on whites. It coats fibres and traps the residue you are trying to remove.
  • Overdosing detergent. Excess detergent does not rinse out and becomes its own grey-yellow film.

Frequently asked questions

How do you remove yellow stains from white clothes?

Soak in dissolved oxygen bleach for four to eight hours, then wash hot. For antiperspirant yellowing, pre-treat with white vinegar for 30 minutes and rinse before the oxygen bleach stage.

Why do my white clothes turn yellow after washing?

Usually detergent or softener residue that is not rinsing out, often from overloading or overdosing. Run a hot rinse-only cycle on the garment and cut your detergent dose by a third.

Can you remove stains from white clothes that have been dried?

Often yes with a long oxygen bleach soak, because yellowing is oxidised residue rather than pigment. Allow two overnight soaks before giving up.

Does baking soda whiten clothes?

It softens water and helps detergent work, which produces a modest brightening. It is not a bleaching agent, so it will not reverse established yellowing on its own.

Whites that photograph worse than they look

Cameras exaggerate yellowing far more than the eye does, because automatic white balance references the brightest area in the frame.

Set white balance manually against a grey card rather than letting the camera guess. Sellers shooting whites week after week generally end up comparing studio rates against AI product photography, which is the category we rank on this site.
